Goals for Web Designers
by Ron Kurtus (revised 24 June 2008)
A major motivation for a web designer is self-expression in being able to design and develop a website to be proud of. Another goal is to make sure users of the website have a good experience. Finally, a web designer hopes for career rewards, such as good pay and advancement.
Questions you may have include:
- How do you express concepts and ideas?
- How do you satisfy the Web user or audience?
- How do you get rewards from the process?
This lesson will answer those questions. There is a mini-quiz near the end of the lesson.
Self-expression
As a Web developer, you want to be able to design Web pages that can effectively display material, provide interactivity, and be artistically pleasing to the user. In order to do this, you need to know the nuances of Web design and delivery and the various tools and software applications you can use.
You must also have the creative wherewithal to put that material together in a form that your audience will be able to use.
Provide user satisfaction
The Web is a communication device. If the user or audience does not understand or enjoy what you are presenting, you have not achieved a major goal of the process.
Important factors to remember in obtaining user satisfaction are:
- Make sure it works for all users,
- Make it pleasing to the eye, and
- Get the audience to participate.
Get rewards
You want to get some sort of reward for the work you have done. This may be self-satisfaction, recognition from the audience, or financial gain.
If you are taking Web development classes in school, you want to get good grades in those classes.
If you are a Webmaster or developer at work, you want to receive:
- Money
- Continued assignments
- Advancement of career
- Learning new skills
- Self-satisfaction
Summary
A successful Web designer achieves the goals of expression, audience satisfaction and desired rewards. You should be aware of your goals as you pursue success in this field.
Use your skills to better the lives of those around you
