Why do magnets attract toward opposite poles?
January 23, 2012
Question
what is the main reason that a magnet gets attracted towards opposite pole ? whether same poles attract in any exceptional case?
dhaya - India (22376)
Answer
You could think of a magnet as having its field flowing from one pole to the other. When opposite poles are near each other, the field flows from one to the other, creating a pulling force. When similar poles are near each other, the fields push against each other, thus repelling the poles.
This is a good analogy or model of what happens and why it happens. Of course, it is more complex than that.
If an iron rod was slightly magnetized, a magnet could still pull the rod toward it, even though they are similar poles. The reason is that the magnetic force would be pulling on the rest of the rod, thus overcoming the repulsion.

How is parallel circuit different than series circuit?
January 25, 2012
Question
i didn't understand how a parallel circuit is wired different than a series circuit.can you explain?
ignacio - USA (22379)
Answer
The illustrations in Direct Current (DC) Electrical Circuits shows how a series circuit has its resistors in a line, one after another, while a parallel circuit has the resistors going across the circuit but parallel to each other.

Cold-roll steel will not retain it’s magnetism
January 25, 2012
Question
What cold-roll steel will not retain it’s magnetism after it is separated from a magnetic field? I need to know what material to ask for.
Carl - USA (22380)
Answer
Cold-roll steel that is considered soft steel (98% iron) will not hold its magnetism very long. Hardened steels that include nickel retain their magnetism for a much long time.
See Magnetic Materials for a listing.

Creating electricity from a magnetic field
January 26, 2012
Question
Hello there, I am trying to find out something and hope you can help.
I know that when a wire is passed through a magnetic field at a certain speed a voltage is produced. But what I dont understand is if it is the north of south pole of the magnet that causes this, or is it both? And if both does the effect the direction of current?
Hope you can help me,
Many thanksJulian - UK (22383)
Answer
There is a magnetic field that flows between the North and South poles. It is arbitrarily defined that it goes from N to S. You can use what is called the "right hand rule" to determine the direction of the current. See Magnetism and the Lorentz Force for a good illustration.

Is it possible to get 18 Distinctions?
January 28, 2012
Question
Is it possible to get 18Distinctions?
Dineo - South Africa (22390)
Answer
I'm not sure what you mean by 18 Distinctions. Are these special awards?

Question
I am teacher. please send physics experiment
rogaye - Iran (22391)
Answer
Physics is a large subject. You need to define your specific area of interest.
In the meantime, you can look through the items at Physical Science Experiments. I hope to be adding more in the near future.

What is the impact of standards on the desing process?
January 29, 2012
Question
the impact of standards on the design process in relation to the profitability of the business
Hyden - UK (22392)
Answer
in the short-term, setting standards in the design process can be more costly, but in the long-run, it is absolutely necessary. Many companies start with ISO 9000 to document requirements, standards, and procedures. Then they move to TQM to look at ways to reduce costs and improve quality. The design team should be involved in both processes.

The right to bear arms and defeat the government
January 29, 2012
Question
my name is michael. people have that right to bear arms. seems your government wants to change this. someone sad i dont have the right to speak cause im not american, but i do we share the longest border in the world. it wil affect us.
and anther question: the person that told me so there parents moved romploand to america. im half scottish. my greatgrandfather comes from new york state. look into the keith clans and crawford clans in america. so i do have that right.
i think if it ever came down it, the best way to defeat the goverment is this: hit and run attacks, blow up many building, use rocket launchers to take out helicopters. they are very successful. they worked in the afghanstan russia conflict and resently taking down 31 navy seals. they your government has abonded the people for this elite. i hope there is a revlotution. if there is, ill be fighing to i will do anything what ever it takes for people freedoms. seems in the military thers immigrants that are in the army and deep inside they just have resentment.michael - Canada (22393)
Answer
The Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution states that the right to bear arms is part of a regulated militia. It is meant for the people to organize to defend their communities and not to overthrow the government that allowed that right.
Most revolutions that have overthrown the government have resulted in much bloodshed, often of innocent people. Also, the new government that takes over can easily become a dictatorship. Is that what you are looking for?
Physics - Kinetic Theory of Matter
Heat expands objects
January 31, 2012
Question
Questions
use the kinetic matter to explain why:-
1.A metal rod expands when heated.
2.A hot as balloon rises into the air.
3.The alcohol in a thermometer drops when the thermometer in a cold liquid.Sizwe - South Africa (22397)
Answer
When a material is heated, its atoms or molecules move faster and have more kinetic energy. Collisions of the fast moving particles put pressure on the shape of the object, causing it to expand. See Temperature Measurement: Thermometers.
When the air inside a balloon, it expands and takes up more space. Thus, its density is less than the surrounding air. This is similar to an object floating in water. See How Objects Float in Fluids.

Davy Crockett was also a weapon system
January 31, 2012
Question
Yuo mention that Davy Crockett was the TV show with Fess Parker. Some videos have the Davy Crockett as the Nuclear Weapon a tactical nuclear recoilless gun for firing the M388 neclear Projectile that was deployed by the US during the Cold War.
The Davy Crockett was developed in the late 1950s for use against Soviet troops had war broken out in Europe. Small teams of the Atomic Battle Group would be stationed every few km to guard against Soviet attack, using the power of their nuclear artillery to kill or incopacitate advancing troop formation and irradiate the area so that it was uninhabitable for up to 48 hours, long enough to mobilize NATO forces.Randall - USA (22398)
Answer
Thanks for the input. Although I'm sure that Billy Joel was referring to the TV show, I still added information about the Davy Crockett weapon system to the page.
