Mini-Quiz: Uses for Hydrogen

by Ron Kurtus (revised 12 January 2011)

Take this Mini-Quiz to check your understanding of the lesson material.

1. If the atomic weight of hydrogen is 1 and helium is 4, how can helium gas be only twice as heavy as hydrogen gas?

Half of the helium leaks out of the balloon or blimp

Hydrogen is actually twice as heavy as helium

Helium gas consists of single atoms, while hydrogen consists of H2

2. How can hydrogen cars be free of pollution?

The exhaust would only be water vapor

Hydrogen would combine with carbon to produce healthy methane gas

They would be lighter than air

3. Why is hydrogen needed to make ammonia?

So that ammonia can be lighter than air

Each ammonia molecule has 3 hydrogen atoms

Hydrogen makes ammonia smell real bad

If you got all three correct, you are on your way to becoming a Champion in Chemistry. If you had problems, you had better look over the material again.

Hydrogen is an essential part of water
