Mini-Quiz: Types of Chemical Bonding

by Ron Kurtus (14 October 2005)

Take this Mini-Quiz to check your understanding of the lesson material.

1. Since Chlorine (Cl) has 7 valance electrons, how would it bond to form a Chlorine molecule (Cl2)?

It is impossible, because then it would have 14 electrons in its outer shell

It combines with ionic bonding, giving one electron to the other Chlorine atom

It combines with a single covalent bonding, each sharing 2 valance electrons

2. Why is the electron dot notation used to illustrate a molecule?

It allows you to show all the electrons in each atom

It can be less confusing than drawing the solar system model of the atoms

The method is only used to illustrate ions

3. If Potassium (K) has 1 valence electron and Chlorine (Cl) has 7, is KCl possible?

Yes, by ionic bonding

No, since they have different number of electrons

Yes, by double covalent bonding

If you got all three correct, you are on your way to becoming a Champion in Chemistry. If you had problems, you had better look over the material again.
