Mini-Quiz: Characteristics of our Sun

by Ron Kurtus (revised 11 April 2009)

Take this Mini-quiz to check your understanding of the lesson material.

1. How can the mass of the Sun be 300,000 times Earth's, when its diameter is only 100 times Earth's?

The Sun is hotter on its surface, making it heavier

The density of the Sun is much greater than the Earth's, especially near the core

The gravity of the Sun increases its mass

2. How do gamma rays at the core become visible light at the surface?

Radiation is absorbed and re-emitted at a lower frequency

Visible light rays are the same as gamma rays

The amplitude of the radiation drops as it moves to the surface

3. What are sunspots?

Spots you see after staring at the Sun too long

Optical illusions caused by the Sun's atmosphere

Cooler areas on the surface of the Sun that appear darker

If you got all three correct, you are on your way to becoming a Champion in Astronomy. If you had problems, you had better look over the material again.
